AWD Alliance strengthens partnership with the Industry Capability Network

09 Feb 2010

The Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) Alliance has strengthened its partnership with the Industry Capability Network (ICN) to better communicate with suppliers interested in securing contracts for Australia’s most advanced naval warships.

The nation-building AWD project is the most complex ever undertaken by Defence in Australia. Key aims are ensuring maximum benefits to industry and enhancing Australia’s strategic industrial base. ICN links industry with major projects, identifying and matching buyers to suppliers of products and services.

Alliance CEO, John Gallacher said the AWD Alliance Supplier Registration Portal has been operating since the start of 2007. The Alliance and ICN have now begun a three-month trial with ICN representative David Land embedded in the AWD team, aiming to make engagement with industry more efficient.

“In so doing, the Alliance and ICN seek to ensure that where opportunities exist for local suppliers, these opportunities are identified and maximised.

“The Alliance, just like many European companies, uses the Ariba Procurement software package for all of its purchasing activities. Our procurement team is finding that once new users get used to it, they find the system very efficient.

“Within the Alliance we are making sure everything is received on time, from tender submissions to purchase deliveries. Suppliers need to be committed to that as well,” said Mr Gallacher.

With more than 1900 suppliers currently on the database, it is not possible for the AWD Alliance to deal with all potential suppliers individually, and it is only through the systems established by the procurement teams that the best outcomes can be achieved.

David Land of ICN SA, now based with the AWD Shipbuilding team at Osborne is working to increase suppliers’ understanding of their responsibilities during the procurement process, which will make transactions straightforward and eliminate time wastage.

Mr Land highlighted these issues to industry representatives at the Defence Teaming Centre’s Maritime Brief on Wednesday 20 January 2010. He was well received and answered many questions from suppliers.

General Manager of ICNSA Darren Hill said, “Although ICN has been working closely with the AWD Alliance for three years, closer cooperation will significantly improve the identification of local supply opportunities. Positioning David within the AWD procurement team will help us better understand opportunities, timeframes and issues faced by suppliers.

“If they do miss out on winning contracts we will be well placed to provide feedback to them,” Mr Hill said.

The AWD Alliance is made up of the Defence Materiel Organisation, ASC AWD Shipbuilder as the shipbuilder and Raytheon Australia as the Combat System Systems Engineer. These Alliance partners are working together to deliver the Royal Australian Navy's next generation Hobart Class AWDs.
