Construction Underway In Three States

Three shipyards in three states, hundreds of people and dozens of both large and small contractors across the country have begun constructing Australia’s next generation air warfare destroyers. The CEO of the Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) Alliance, John Gallacher said today the $8 billion project had successfully completed the design phase and had begun construction of the three Hobart Class Air Warfare Destroyers (AWDs).

Electronic warfare system preferred supplier selected

Greg Combet, Minister for Defence Materiel and Science, today announced that the Air Warfare Destroyer Alliance has selected ITT–EDO Reconnaissance and Surveillance Systems, Inc as the preferred supplier for the electronic warfare system for the Hobart Class Air Warfare Destroyers (AWDs).

Critical Design Review passed

Greg Combet, the Minister for Defence Personnel, Materiel and Science announced at the PAC 2010 Maritime Conference that the AWD project has passed a critical design milestone. Critical Design Review (CDR) was preceded by 22 lead in reviews, conducted over 35 days and involving more than 300 people reviewing 1200 documents. Completion of CDR demonstrates that the AWD Alliance has sufficiently developed the design of the ships and will now move into the production phase.

Shipyard opens at Osborne, SA

The AWD project has reached another significant milestone with the opening by the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, of ASC’s $120 million shipyard, located at Osborne, South Australia on 21 January 2010. The new shipyard will become the construction and consolidation site for the $8 billion Hobart Class Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) Program.

Work begins on Pilot Blocks

Greg Combet, Minister for Defence Personnel, Materiel and Science, announced today that Australia’s $8 billion Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) project was progressing well and would commence hull construction in the next few months.
